UCM SOLUTIONS / DRIVE BRAKE UCMF
Quiescent current operated emergency braking system
The FUKA drive brake is a quiescent current operated emergency braking system, which is approved both as protection against unintended car movement (UCM) and as a protective device for the ascending car against overspeed (ACOP).
What is UCM / ACOP?
UCM ("Unintended Car Movement") is an unintended car movement in the landing area with open doors.
ACOP (Ascending Car Overspeed Protection) protects against impermissibly high upward travel. Modern standards require certified detection and an effective protective device that covers both UCM and ACOP simultaneously.

UCM Solutions – including protection against ascending car overspeed (ACOP)
UCM ("Unintended Car Movement") refers to an unintended, uncontrolled movement of the car with open doors in the landing area. Additionally, the standard requires protection against ascending car overspeed (ACOP). Both hazardous situations are addressed in current safety regulations and must be covered by appropriate protective measures.
For elevators placed on the market since 2012, a UCM protection system is mandatory. For modernizations, operation according to the state of the art is required, as described in the EN 81 series of standards.
We offer solutions that cover both UCM and ACOP simultaneously.
FUKA Drive Brake – UCMF / ACOP Protection (type-tested according to EN 81-20/50 and soon according to ISO 8100)
Our solution is based on a quiescent current operated emergency brake directly on the drive. The system acts both for UCM (protection against unintended movement) and for ACOP (protection against ascending car overspeed), triggering the car safety device in case of impermissible movement or exceeding the monitored speed. The brake is designed to safely decelerate and stop the car from at least 115% of rated speed.
The dynamic braking force is provided by safety brakes from mayr®, which are proven worldwide in elevator applications and feature reliable spring-loaded release. The brake requires reliable detection and effective stopping from at least 115% of rated speed.

Why a Drive-UCM/ACOP Solution?
UCM and ACOP protection can be technically implemented in various ways. However, for modernizations, type-tested systems are particularly attractive because they can be quickly retrofitted and work reliably.
The FUKA drive brake offers decisive advantages here:
This enables an economical, type-tested solution with clear, demonstrable protective effect against both hazards.
Operational Safety Regulation & Risk Assessment (Germany)
Elevators must be operated as work equipment within the meaning of the Operational Safety Regulation (BetrSichV). Operators must conduct and maintain a risk assessment.
TBRS 3121 specifies the BetrSichV for elevator systems: If these Technical Rules are complied with, it can be assumed that the requirements of the regulation are met.
A type-tested UCM/ACOP protection is therefore an essential building block for risk reduction in the risk assessment of existing systems.
USA / Canada – Standard Basis ASME A17.1 / CSA B44
In the North American market, UCM protection systems are also based on ASME A17.1 / CSA B44.
There, UCM is defined as unintended car movement away from the landing and is regulated by corresponding requirements.
Our solution can be designed for this standard framework and is adapted project-specifically to the respective local jurisdiction.
