Rope Drums for Drum Elevators

Rope Drums for Drum Elevators – Historic Technology with Modern Relevance
Since the early days of elevator engineering, drum elevators have been among the classic designs of rope-operated lift systems. Although traction elevators are now the industry standard, rope drums still remain an important solution for specific applications – particularly where building conditions or existing installations require special technical approaches.
At Rudolf Fuka GmbH, we have been manufacturing rope drums for many decades and continue to be one of the few specialized manufacturers in this field.
The drums currently being produced in our factory clearly demonstrate that this technology is far from obsolete.
What Is a Drum Elevator?
In a drum elevator, the suspension rope is not guided over a traction sheave but wound directly onto a drum. By winding and unwinding the rope, the elevator car moves up and down.
The key difference compared to a conventional traction elevator is that no counterweight is required. This creates important design advantages – especially in buildings with limited or difficult shaft conditions.
Even today, this remains a decisive benefit in many modernization projects.
A Technology with History
Drum elevators were among the very first electrically operated elevator systems and were already being installed in residential, industrial, and commercial buildings in the early 20th century.
Many of these systems are still in operation today – some for more than 80 or even 100 years.
What is particularly remarkable is that, in many cases, there is still no more practical or economical alternative than carefully modernizing and continuing to operate existing drum elevator systems.
This remains an important focus of our work today.
Modern Solutions for Existing Installations
As part of modernization projects, we supply far more than individual drums.
Depending on the scope of the project, we manufacture:
- replacement rope drums
- completely new drum units
- drums combined with modern drive systems
- complete assemblies including machine frames, bearings, rope guidance systems, couplings, and mechanical connection components
This allows existing drum elevators to be technically modernized while preserving the original installation structure.
Especially in listed buildings or shafts with restricted space, this is often the most economical and technically efficient solution.
Still Relevant for New Installations
Although drum elevators are now considered a niche application, there are still situations where new installations make sense.
Particularly where:
- there is no space for a counterweight
- shaft geometry creates special requirements
- or building conditions require maximum space efficiency
a drum elevator can still offer important advantages.
That is why FUKA continues to manufacture around 100 rope drums per year – both for modernization projects and new applications.
Rope Drums Beyond Elevator Technology
Although our traditional focus is the elevator industry, rope drums and similar drum systems have long been used in many other areas of conveying and industrial engineering.
The technical principle remains the same:
Wherever people, loads, or materials must be moved safely, drum and rope systems play an important role.
In addition to classic elevator applications, we also supply customers from a variety of industrial sectors, including:
- conveying technology
- mechanical and plant engineering
- material handling
- industrial systems
- special-purpose machinery
Typical applications range from vertical conveying systems to transport and positioning equipment within industrial production processes.
Even in modern manufacturing environments, drum systems continue to be used for moving heavy components, workpieces, or large-format materials between different production stages.
Particularly for customized special solutions, robust and mechanically well-defined systems are often required. This is where experience in the design and manufacturing of drums, rope guidance systems, and mechanical assemblies becomes essential.
Manufacturing and Expertise at FUKA
The production of rope drums requires high precision and extensive experience.
Special requirements include:
- precise rope geometry
- machining of large diameters
- concentric running accuracy
- connection dimensions
- and compatibility with existing systems and drive technologies
Thanks to our decades of experience in mechanical elevator components, we have built comprehensive expertise in the design and manufacturing of these specialized products.
In addition to rope drums, our product portfolio also includes:
- traction sheaves
- rope pulleys
- deflection sheaves
- and braking systems
Tradition Meets Modern Engineering
Even though drum elevators now represent only a small part of the market, they are an impressive example of how durable and adaptable technical solutions can be.
For us at FUKA, manufacturing rope drums is therefore not only a specialized product segment, but also a piece of engineering history that still has practical relevance today.
